Crémaillère Harbour Trail is a rugged backcountry route within the Great Northern Trail Network, leading hikers to a remote and historically significant harbour near St. Anthony. This trail offers a more raw and undeveloped experience, following old footpaths once used by berry pickers and those who lived and worked along this stretch of coastline.
The route can be accessed from the American Base Road or by connecting from the Cartreau Point Trail. Many users choose to begin from the American Base Road and return the same way, while others incorporate this route as an extension from Cartreau Point Trail, continuing through to the American Base Road for a longer backcountry experience. Parking is available at the American Base Road trailhead, as well as at either Cartreau Point Trail trailhead.
Hikers will encounter steep climbs and descents, coastal barrens, sections of beach walking, and optional rock scrambling along the shoreline. The terrain is natural and variable throughout, reflecting the traditional travel routes that once connected people to the sheltered waters of Crémaillère Harbour.
Crémaillère Harbour itself is a deep, protected harbour that was historically used as a seasonal fishing location, likely during the French Shore period and later by residents of nearby Goose Cove. While no formal structures remain, the area holds quiet historical significance, including an unmarked cemetery believed to be located along the harbour — a reminder of the families who once lived and worked in this remote place.
Near the harbour, hikers will notice multiple worn footpaths across an open landscape. These routes are easy to follow visually, and visitors are encouraged to explore while remaining aware of their surroundings.
